There are multiple apps on the market for transcription services, but luckily all of Erikson students, faculty, and staff have access to the Clipchamp app (previously known as "Stream") through the Office 365 Suite. Clipchamp is a video hosting and editing tool that also allows you to create and download full transcripts with time stamps.
-
To head to your Microsoft apps, follow the link below. You should automatically be logged in through SSO (single-sign-on), otherwise it will just be your Erikson login credentials:
- URL: https://m365.cloud.microsoft/apps
- Once there, find the Clipchamp app on your dashboard or by heading to the "All Apps" link.
- Once you are in the Clipchamp dashboard, select the "upload" option so that you can upload your desired video to be transcribed. The video will upload to your OneDrive, but you can specify what folder you want it saved to.
- PLEASE NOTE: Clipchamp does not accept audio only files, if you would like to transcribe mp3 files, you will first have to convert it from an mp3 to an mp4 file. Please email libraryhelp@erikson.edu if you need more assistance with this task.
- As soon as your video has been uploaded to Clipchamp, you will click "open" on the small box that appears on the bottom right of your screen. That link will take you to another screen where you have options to edit and select video settings.
- Under your "Video Settings" option, you will see "Transcript and Captions". Select that option and confirm that a transcript is being generated.
- NOTE: The time it takes for a generated transcript to finish depends on how long the video is. You may leave the tab open and work on other tasks while Clipchamp finishes the captions (closing out and refreshing can also help if the transcript is stuck in "taking longer than expected").
- Once the transcript is finished, you can edit any spelling that the app might have gotten incorrect by clicking on "edit" once you hover over a paragraph. The transcripts are fairly accurate most of the time, but it can get certain words that are not common wrong or any audio that was too quiet might also not be correct.
- After making your edits, you can then select the "Download" button to download as either a .vtt file or a .docx document. The document should also provide you time stamps.
